Islamic vehicle leasing explained

Ijara Car Finance in the UK.

Looking for an alternative to conventional interest-bearing car finance? Learn how Ijara vehicle leasing works, what to check in the agreement and how Sharia Car Finance can help you get started.

Sharia Car Finance is a UK credit broker, not a lender. We currently help customers explore an Ijara-based vehicle finance option, with personal support and free vehicle sourcing when arranging finance through us.

The fundamentals

What is Ijara car finance?

Ijara is an Islamic leasing arrangement in which an asset is made available for use in exchange for agreed rental payments.

In vehicle finance, the finance provider typically acquires the car and leases it to the customer under an agreed contract. Unlike an ordinary cash loan, the arrangement centres on the use of an identifiable asset.

Some Ijara products include a separate route to eventual ownership. The precise legal arrangements depend on the lender's documents, so it's important to understand both the lease and any transfer agreement.

Ijara is not simply a different name for a loan

Whether an arrangement meets the relevant Sharia requirements depends on its contractual structure and obligations, not just the names used or the monthly amount payable.

Customers should check the lender's actual agreement and any Sharia certification or supporting product information. SCF can explain the process but does not issue independent religious rulings.
Understanding the contract

Who owns the car, and when?

It's important to distinguish using a car during a lease from legally owning it. The specific arrangements must be understood before signing.

At the start

The provider purchases an eligible vehicle in accordance with its product process and agreement.

During the agreement

You use the vehicle under the lease terms and make the agreed payments. Responsibilities for insurance, maintenance and other costs are set out in the documents.

At the end

If the product provides a route to ownership, the conditions and any separate transfer steps will be explained in the finance documents.

Important: Don't assume that every Islamic lease transfers ownership automatically, or that every Ijara product has the same terms. Review the lender's actual documents.

Your financial commitments

What does Ijara cost?

Avoiding interest does not mean a vehicle lease has no cost.

An Ijara arrangement involves contractual rental payments and may include other payments or charges specified by the finance provider. What matters is understanding the total financial commitment, the rights and obligations under the agreement, and what happens if circumstances change.

Sharia Car Finance does not charge customers a broker fee for arranging finance.

Check before you agree

Your initial payment or deposit; regular payment amounts and dates; total payable; agreement length; your responsibilities for the vehicle; the treatment of missed payments; early termination; and any end-of-agreement ownership or transfer conditions.

We don't publish sample rental rates here because available terms depend on the finance provider's assessment and the specific vehicle and agreement.
Before you enquire

Can I apply for Ijara car finance?

Eligibility depends on the finance provider's current policy, your circumstances and the vehicle you're considering. We don't promise acceptance or advertise invented credit-score or income cut-offs.

What the lender may consider

Affordability, credit history, your income and employment circumstances, and the suitability of the chosen vehicle and supplying dealer. The lender makes the finance decision.

What to have ready

A realistic monthly budget, a potential deposit, an idea of the vehicle you want and accurate information about your circumstances. Our team will explain which details are needed at each stage.

Registering your interest on SCF's website does not trigger a credit check. If you proceed, the assessment process and any credit searches will be explained at the relevant stage.
More than arranging finance

Haven't found your car yet?

Our free vehicle sourcing service can help.

Tell us your vehicle preferences and budget. We can search suitable UK motor dealers, help with relevant vehicle and dealer information and assist with coordinating the finance process.

You make the final vehicle choice; the lender decides whether the vehicle and finance application meet its criteria.

Why use SCF rather than navigate it alone?

You'll have a UK-based team to discuss your circumstances, explain the process, help with vehicle searches and coordinate with the dealer as your application progresses. SCF is a broker, not the finance provider, and works with a limited lender panel.

Common questions

Ijara Car Finance FAQs.

Is Ijara car finance interest-free?
Ijara is a lease-based structure designed around agreed rental payments rather than a conventional interest-bearing loan. It still has a financial cost. Whether a specific agreement is Sharia-compliant depends on its full structure and relevant review.
Do I own the car during Ijara?
Under a typical Ijara lease the finance provider owns the vehicle during the lease. If the product provides a route to ownership, the transfer conditions are set out in the documents. Check the actual arrangement offered.
Is Ijara the same as Murabaha?
No. Ijara is fundamentally lease-based; Murabaha is a cost-plus sale. SCF currently helps customers explore an Ijara-based vehicle finance option. Our Halal Car Finance Guide explains both structures.
Can I get Ijara finance for a used car?
A used vehicle may be suitable, depending on lender requirements for the vehicle and the supplying dealer. Share the details with our team before assuming it qualifies.
Does registering interest affect my credit score?
No credit check is carried out simply because you complete SCF's registration-of-interest form. Subsequent application stages may involve credit searches, which will be explained.
What if I have had credit problems?
A lender will assess the application under its own current credit and affordability criteria. We cannot guarantee availability for adverse-credit circumstances; contact us for an explanation of the process before progressing.
Do I need to be Muslim?
No. Customers of different backgrounds can enquire about Sharia-compliant vehicle finance, subject to the lender's normal requirements.
Does SCF charge a broker fee?
No. Sharia Car Finance does not charge customers a broker fee for arranging finance. The lender's finance terms and payments are separate and will be explained during the process.
