Understanding The Basics

What Makes Car Finance Halal?

The structure of the agreement is central to Islamic finance.

Islamic finance prohibits Riba, commonly understood as interest, and seeks to ensure financial arrangements follow recognised Sharia principles.

Rather than simply lending money with interest, Islamic vehicle finance can use contractual structures involving leasing, asset ownership or sale.

The particular structure, obligations and conditions depend on the product and finance provider.

It's About More Than The Monthly Payment.

When considering a Sharia-compliant agreement, it is important to understand who owns the vehicle, how the payments are calculated, what charges may apply and how ownership or return of the vehicle is dealt with at the end of the agreement.

Common Islamic Finance Structures

Understanding Ijara & Murabaha.

Two recognised structures used in Islamic asset finance. Their features and availability differ by provider.

Currently Available Through SCF

Ijara — Lease-Based Finance

Ijara is a leasing arrangement under which a finance provider owns an asset and makes it available for the customer's use in return for agreed rental payments.

In vehicle finance, the provider generally purchases the vehicle and leases it to the customer under the relevant agreement.

Where the product includes a route to ownership, the conditions and steps for transferring ownership are set out in the contractual documents.

Customers should review the payment schedule, responsibilities, charges and end-of-agreement arrangements carefully.

Murabaha — Cost-Plus Sale

Murabaha is a sale-based arrangement in which a finance provider purchases an asset and sells it to the customer at an agreed price.

That price includes a disclosed profit amount above the provider's purchase cost.

The customer pays the agreed sale price in accordance with the contract, which may allow payments over time.

Murabaha is described here to help explain Islamic finance principles. It is not currently available through SCF.

Important: The availability of a particular Sharia-compliant finance structure does not guarantee eligibility or approval. Product terms, ownership arrangements and charges depend on the relevant finance provider.
Comparing The Approaches

Halal Car Finance vs Conventional Finance.

The principal distinction lies in the underlying contractual arrangement, not simply the amount paid each month.

Conventional Car Finance

Conventional vehicle finance may involve an interest-bearing credit agreement, such as certain hire purchase or personal loan products.

Costs, ownership arrangements and end-of-contract rights vary according to the agreement chosen.

Sharia-Compliant Car Finance

Islamic vehicle finance is designed to avoid Riba through an appropriate contractual structure, for example an asset lease or a cost-plus sale.

A Sharia-compliant arrangement can still involve a commercial profit, rental payments and permitted charges.

The fact that two finance products produce similar monthly payments does not mean their contracts have the same structure. Always review the actual agreement.

Your Finance Journey

How Halal Car Finance Works In Practice.

Here's an overview of the main stages when exploring vehicle finance through Sharia Car Finance.

01

Discuss Your Requirements

Tell us about your circumstances, budget and preferred vehicle. An initial soft credit search may help assess eligibility.

02

Find A Suitable Vehicle

You can choose a vehicle yourself or ask our team to help search through UK motor dealers.

03

Complete The Application

The relevant finance provider assesses your application against its own credit, affordability and eligibility criteria.

04

Review The Agreement

If an offer is available, review the contractual structure, payments, charges and obligations before deciding whether to proceed.

05

Vehicle Purchase

Subject to approval and completion requirements, the finance provider purchases the vehicle as part of the agreed arrangement.

06

Arrange Collection

Once the required steps are complete, the dealer and relevant parties coordinate collection or delivery arrangements.

Understanding Your Commitments

What About Costs & Payments?

Sharia-compliant does not mean that finance has no cost.

The finance provider may earn rental income or an agreed commercial profit, depending on the product structure.

Before entering an agreement, customers should understand the payment schedule, total amounts payable, any relevant charges and the consequences of missing payments.

Consider whether payments will remain affordable throughout the agreement term.

Important Things To Check

✓ Deposit or initial payment
✓ Regular rental or instalment amounts
✓ Agreement term and total payable
✓ Any fees or additional charges
✓ Late or missed payment provisions
✓ End-of-agreement and ownership terms

Frequently Asked Questions

Halal Car Finance FAQs.

Answers to some common questions about Islamic vehicle finance in the UK.

Is halal car finance interest-free?

Sharia-compliant finance is structured to avoid prohibited interest (Riba). This does not mean the arrangement has no financial cost. Depending on the product, a provider may receive agreed rental payments or a disclosed profit.

Is halal car finance available in the UK?

Yes. Sharia-compliant vehicle finance is available in the UK through specialist providers, subject to product availability, eligibility and provider criteria.

Do I need to be Muslim to apply?

No. Sharia-compliant finance can be explored by Muslims and non-Muslims. The relevant provider's eligibility and application requirements still apply.

What is the difference between Ijara and Murabaha?

Ijara is a lease-based structure involving the use of an asset owned by a finance provider. Murabaha involves the purchase and subsequent sale of an asset at an agreed price including a disclosed profit.

SCF currently introduces customers to an Ijara-based product. Murabaha is included in this guide for educational purposes.

Will an initial credit check affect my score?

An initial soft credit search does not affect your credit score. A formal application may involve a hard credit search by the relevant finance provider. We'll explain the stages involved.

Can I finance a used vehicle?

Used vehicles may be eligible, subject to the finance provider's criteria, including relevant vehicle and dealer requirements.

Can you help me find a car?
